Here is a comparison of a reproduction and post war field cap . As you can see the post war field cap -is all wrong for War Time impression . The Reproduction ,looks the part but has ,Problems as in the Bill /visor was not made correct , the big problem -if it gets WET the bill will drop down in your face , when this copy was made it was made without the stiffer in the bill and the extra stitching for it. In my opinion : At best call it A Movie Prop ! the 2 caps sale for over $50.00 ea. Sad thing is the vender that sales them ! is a Collector and knows thy are wrong for War Time Impression .

KevOs? We've got some interesting caps from them...don't get me wrong, they are a good supplier, their Summer Tunics look the part, but the caps let me down. I'd really like to see a good repro come out in the near future.

Kev Os is incredibly hit and miss. I am, however, looking into having caps reproed by GD43

That hat is nice. Probably would be an easy conversion. My only issue with it is the color. Most caps I've seen have a bluish hue to them. I'm sure there were variations in the manufacturing though, (don't get me started on the tunic variations) so I won't say it's not correct. You may want to hold off cutting up that cap as I'm working on getting correct repros made for the unit.

Yeah, it would be nice to get a good source for the field cap. I do agree it is probably a little too dark for Finnish usage if I can ever find another one I am tempted to see if I can make a Norwegian field cap since it has the same shape of the Finnish cap but the button flaps are on the side of the hat.

Daniel, it's not the darkness, it's the color. All the evidence I've seen is that the Finns used bluish/grey colored caps. The tunics, on the other hand, varied from a brown color to a dark blue color (like KevOs sells). The most common color for the tunic is German feldgrau or swedish grey, prob because the Finns imported alot of German and Swede wool. Another thing I'd like to point out is that the Finns only seemed to use WOOL caps, even with summer tunics. I have yet to find a single picture of a Finn in the so-called "summer" cap. I've seen pics of them and I know they are real, but the Finns don't appear to have been issued them.
My recommendation to you is to get a cheap Luftwaffe M43 (ebay) and Mod it. It takes a little work but the result is half way decent and a good way to tide yourself over until we get the M36s reproed. I can send you instructions on how to convert one if you'd like.

Yeah, that would be useful. I saw a few Luftwaffe hats over at Reenactorfest in Chicago a few weeks ago and considered buying one for conversion possibilities but ended up bypassing them because I wasn't sure on what needed to be changed on the cap.

How much did the M43s go for? I've been buying the cheap Chinese repros off of Ebay, since then I don't have any regrets in destroying an expensive (and good quality) cap. J: Do you have the pattern for the Finn M36 cap that you can post? I've pretty much been winging it, just going off of an original I've found so some corroboration would be awesome!

They were a nicer reproduction, so that was probably the biggest reason I didn't go for it. Of the cheap Chinese repros, any particular vendor you recommend buying from?
